Black vs. African American

The Dexter cast shows two prominent Latinas in the cast as well as a black actor and others. All finely portrayed in their roles.

Not so black and white

OK this has been bugging me for a while. Blacks seem to have a definite advantage over other minorities in TV and cinema. It has gradually become apparent over the years that there is a disparity and inequality taking place.

That disparity being a lack of roles offered to the second largest populace in the United States, Latinas and Hispanics; and an abundance offered to blacks -the third largest populace in the country.

In fact in every commercial and TV show I see Its almost seen as a required necessity by the powers that be( The liberal minded media) that a black person be seen in it. Do you really ever see other minority groups represented with such magnitude and regularity? Be honest. I think not. And that is where the crux of the problem lies. In fact the only show that I've seen with regularity that has Latinas in it, is a show called Dexter on HBO.

Now lets be clear here I have no problem with people of black color, Martin Luther King is an Icon and truly a hero of mine. Not so much Malcolm X .

By the way when did the word black ever become out of fashion and viewed as in any way disparaging? And why was it suddenly replaced with African American in the American lexicon?. I'm Irish American- mostly, but mostly I'm a mutt- and If I asked that you call me that every time you referred to me, I would feel kind of silly.. And what of you, are you polish American,or Italian-American? And do you need to be called that to feel culturally accepted?

I also think there should be more equality when it comes to viewing programs. And what of Asians and American Indians, of which I share heritage, they're practically nonexistent on TV. I have friendships with blacks by the way, I just don't think I need to be a politically correct zealot to do so.

I would like reading other people's perspective's on this. My my mind is open, if I'm wrong I'd like to know -tell me about it and tell me why I'm wrong. I realize I'm leaving myself open to abject criticism but frankly my dear I don't ...

Endnote: Missing my bus, I was waiting on a bench, and for a half hour I had a spirited discussion with a person who happened to be black, we talked about the evils of conservatism and consoled each other with liberal doses of democracy. But just as I thought, he defended Obama, whom I don't believe has done enough in an administration that hides  corporations and wealthy industries in its pockets and wears the albatross of Wall street around its figurative neck.

But despite it occurring to me that I would have loved to talk more with this intelligent man, I suspected that if I ever did bring up these issues, he would see me just as much a polar opposite as a democrat views a republican. And I would be viewed the republican...

Tokenism has been in vogue on TV for quite a long time and I don't see it ending any time soon. Shows of any sort need ratings and want to be seen as culturally diverse. Blacks have the upper hand on TV's token handouts for now but Hispanics are rising quickly mostly due to numbers which translate into buying power. I feel the real problem is that minority issues are only superficially treated also in a token fashion. Whenever there is a racial incident such as the Shirley Sherrod or Dr. Gates incidents, the media rushes to cover the noise but misses the depth and complexity. I wrote a Hub on this and I believe this is a terrible shame. Great Hub Bohemian Rhapsody. I look forward to reading more.

What you cannot see behind the scenes is this is exactly the kind of shallow “branding” that is taught in college. Ironically I just finished an ethnicities studies class and we spent the entire course differentiating all of the subgroups per race and region. According to the text book, Whites are only good for hoarding all the wealth, all the good jobs, blaming the victim for not achieving more, or when in the case of Asian American’s who out perform Whites, we praise the victim. It is offensive to lump any ethnicity in with another ‘blanket race’, such as Mexicans are not just Hispanics, you better be able to tell the difference or you are a bigot. The most open society on the planet is still festering with racial and gender inequity. Personally, I came away from the course depressed. Like you, I am mostly mixed French Canadian and the rest is mutt status; I could care less if I were referred to as ‘Wonder Bread.’ Life is fraught with difficulties enough for all, I prefer to keep thick skin and achieve the best that I can for my family. All thin skinned individuals need not apply. I am sure someone will tell me otherwise...

I love your style of writing. Open, honest and well aware of societies short comings. Yes, the black community has been neglected and abused for many years, but this generation should not be bound to subjugate itself for the sins of the fathers. Let's just move on with our lives and treat each other with the same respect that we want for ourselves. The wrongs done to any minority were not perpetrated by me, and i will not apologize for someone else's sins. Hopefully, the next generation will be a little more forgiving and tolerant of those differences in others that we should be lauding instead of damning. P.S. Dexter is one of my favorite series. I love the casting.
